Mumbai: The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) has selected actor Richa Chadha and Bollywood director, Onir Dhar, as jury members for short film competitions this year.
Modern slavery and equality are the themes for this year’s competition, aiming to address growing threats to the principles of equality, inclusion, and freedom in the contemporary world.
An excited Richa Chadha, whose 2018 film Love Sonia opened at the IFFM, said, “Being a part of IFFM Short Film Festival 2021 as a jury member is an incredible feeling. To be back here again as a judge is exciting. We are expecting astounding short films on themes of modern slavery and equality, both of which are complex subjects.”
Addressing difficulties in producing short films, she said, “Speaking from experience, I am aware of how difficult it is to tell an entire story in a short time, that too on an important theme. So I’m looking forward to all the short film entries this year.”
Onir, who has been with the IFFM since its inception, is impressed by the diversity in short films and expressed his fascination for this year’s themes. “I think that modern-day slavery runs in streams throughout our present world and that severe exploitation of people comes in many forms. While our Constitution says every person has the Right to Equality, is that the scenario?” he asked.
“This year’s theme gives filmmakers a chance to explore the sides of society that reflect the kind of humanity we have in present times. I am excited to see what the filmmakers come up with,” he added.
IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmik Lange said, “Richa and Onir are the kinds of judges who not only inspire others but also have a huge body of work to represent their expertise and flair in their respective fields. We are honored to have them as our esteemed judges at the 2021 festival.”
The Festival will run from August 12 to 20 and can be availed online from August 15 to 30 across Australia.
