Hyderabad: If the BJP wins the next Assembly elections in Telangana, it would restore Hindu names of cities like Hyderabad, Nizamabad and Karimnagar, among others, reports said on Tuesday.

Dharampuri Arvind, BJP MP from Nizamabad, claimed that people from his constituency wanted to rename the city as Indur after King Indradatta who ruled the area in the fifth century. “Nizamabad is an inauspicious name while Indur relates to the Hindus and India,” he said.

Nizamabad, with a population of 15.77 lakh, was named after the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jahi VI, who ruled the Deccan in the 18th century. The State Government website also records its original name, Indur.

Demands for renaming other cities in the state have also cropped up in recent past, particularly after the Yogi Adityanath Government renamed Faizabad as Ayodhya and Allahabad as Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh.

Raja Singh, the BJP MLA from Goshamahal, said his party would rename Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar should it form government in Telangana next time.

The Yogi, during his recent election campaign in the state, had also called for renaming Karimnagar as Karipuram.
