Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer crashes in the quarterfinals
New Delhi: Swiss star Roger Federer crashed in the Wimbledon quarterfinals in London on Thursday against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz who delivered a shocking 0-6 defeat.
To the disappointment of Federer’s fans worldwide, the 20-time Grand Slam title champion continually lost back-to-back sets.
Hubert, 24, managed to pull off something no other player could when he defeated Federer in straight sets at Wimbledon.
The historic match witnessed Federer losing 3-6 in the first 28 minutes. Although he managed a tie-breaker in the second set, he lost to Hurkacz again 3-4. Hurkacz closed in victoriously with a 6-0 in the final set, thereby sealing a spot in the semi-finals.
As the 8-time Wimbledon Champion walked off the center court, his fans cheered for him and gave the legendary star a standing ovation. Wimbledon’s Twitter handles posted a video of the crowd cheering and motivating the Swiss player.
It was the first time that he had lost a set 0-6 at Wimbledon and the third time at Slam. Earlier, he lost the title in French Opens against Pat Rafter in 1999 and Rafael Nadal in 2008.
This match was Federer’s first straight-set loss since an opening-round exit against Mario Ancic back in 2002.
