3, July-2021, Ahmedabad: In an intense Qualifiers match between Spain and a 10-player Switzerland team in St. Petersburg on Friday, Spain managed to beat its opposition with a score of 3-1, thus becoming the first Euro 2020 team to enter the Semi-Finals.
The Spaniards got an early lead after Denis Zakaria deflected the ball into their net at the 8th minute. However, Xherdan Shaqiri helped the Switzerland team bounce back in the 68th minute. Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon shone throughout the match by skilfully deflecting the Swiss balls.
Extra time was declared as the match was tied to 1-1 even after 90 minutes. Here, Swiss goalkeeper, Yann Sommer managed to save numerous goals in the first half-hour except for the ones by Dani Olmo, Gerard Moreno, and Mikel Oyarzabal.
Spain’s Mike Oyarzabal scored the winning penalty against Ruben Vargas during the penalty shootout after the Swiss team missed out on 3 penalties through Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji, and Vargas, thereby winning the European Championship quarter-finals.
Spain will most likely face Belgium or Italy in the last four.
