Police chief Mushtaq Mahar said initial investigations suggest that the explosion could have been caused by gas leak but the bomb disposal squad and anti-terrorism officials had been rushed to spot and were still examining to determine the cause of the explosion.

The explosion was so powerful that it damaged some other nearby buildings also. The authorities did not rule out further rise in casualty figure. Some media reports said the explosion was so powerful that it shattered the windows of nearby buildings and also damaged some vehicles.

The Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has sought a detailed report of the incident from the authorities.

The incident occurred a day after five people were injured when an IED bomb exploded at the entrance of a bus terminal in the Shireen Jinnah colony area of the city.
