World Olympic Day: Modi praises Indians’ sports spirit
New Delhi: Amid looming uncertainties over whether the expected fourth wave of Covid-19 would impact the Tokyo Olympic Games, scheduled to start next month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the nation is proud of the contribution of sportspersons representing the country in the Olympic Games.
On the occasion of World Olympic Day, in a series of tweets, he wished the members of the Indian contingent scheduled to participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games on Wednesday morning.
‘Today on the occasion of Olympic Day, I appreciate all the sportspersons who have represented India in various Olympic Games. Our nation is proud of their contributions to the sports and their efforts towards motivating other athletes.”
The Prime Minister also mentioned that the Tokyo Olympic Games are going to begin in a few weeks from now. He extended his best wishes to the members of the Indian contingent and said that the contingent ‘consists of our finest athletes.
Modi also shared a link to a quiz competition related to the Olympic Games on the ‘My Gov’ application on the microblogging site, thereby urging the youth to download the app and participate in the quiz.
World Olympic Day was introduced in the year 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games held on June 23, 1894, at Sorbonne in Paris, France. The goal of celebrating the day was to promote participation in sports across the globe and regardless of age, gender, and athletic ability.
