Karnataka: State government may build a memorial for Doctors who succumbed to Covid-19
July 2, 2021 – BENGALURU: State Health minister of Karnataka K. Sudhakar on Thursday said “Karnataka state government is in talks about building a memorial in remembrance of all doctors who died due to covid-19. As a first-of-its-kind, the memorial will be built at the Arogya Soudha to commemorate those doctors who sacrificed their lives while treating covid-19 patients in government and private hospitals across the state,”
“As frontline warriors waged in the battle against the virus, all the doctors, nurses, and paramedics who died on duty are to be remembered as martyrs,” said Sudhakar, who’s a medical doctor by profession.
Since May 2020, about 700 doctors have died while treating covid-19 patients across the state, according to the Karnataka state Health Department.
“A memorial model will be designed soon along the lines of New Delhi’s War Memorial, where people can pay homage to the martyred doctors,” Sudhakar added.
Karnataka health department has recruited about 4,000 doctors in the past 6 months to specifically treat covid-19 patients.
Recalling the services of the late visionary doctor Bidhan Chandra (B.C.) Roy, the minister said that the former West Bengal Chief Minister had been an inspiration for the medical fraternity.
Bidhan Chandra Roy (1 July 1882-1 July 1962) was a noted Bengali physician, educationist, freedom fighter and the Chief Minister of West Bengal who served from 1948 until his death. His birth anniversary is celebrated as Doctor’s Day.
