New Delhi: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain defeated Germany’s Nadine Apetz and secured a place in the Women’s Welterweight (69-75 kg) quarterfinals in an intense playoff.

The Kokugikan Arena hosted the 16-round event on Tuesday.

Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) started slow and gradually made some of the best-timed punches at Apetz. She used a counter-punching technique that helped to deviate Apetz’s blows.

Lovlina was leading since the 1st round with a 3-2 against the German pugilist. She maintained her charge by asserting dominance and aggression in the 2nd round that caught Apetz off guard.

While Apetz tried to deliver better punches in round 3, the 23-year old Indian boxer performed her tactical best by pressurizing and frustrating her opponent, thereby securing a place in the quarterfinals.

She will face former world champion and 4th seed Chinese wrestler Chen Nien-Chin in the Women’s Welterweight quarterfinals on July 30. They will compete for a seat in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Sunday witnessed Indian ace boxer Mary Kom defeated Miguelina Garcia of the Dominican Republic 4-1 and reached the 16 round Women’s Flyweight Category (48-51 kg) in a 32-round match.
