New Delhi: The government of India on Saturday condemned the vandalization of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the US.
Anti-social elements vandalized the statue of Gandhiji on January 28 and the incident occurred in the Central Park of Davis city, California.
The Ministry of External Affairs, India (MEA) criticized this activity and said that “The government of India strongly condemns this malicious and despicable act against a universally respected icon of peace and justice.”
India gifted this statue to the US a few years back.
The Indian embassy in Washington has taken up the matter with the US Department of State for investigation and asks the US government to take necessary action against those responsible for it.
In a statement, the MEA said “The US Department of State has conveyed that the act of vandalism is unacceptable and expressed the hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as quickly as possible.”
Mayor of the Davis city has also regretted the incident and said that “We have initiated the investigation.”
Local Indian community organisations in the US have condemned the act of vandalism.
