NEW DELHI, Mar 6: The Delhi government has decided to form a separate board of school education to run the schools in the national capital.
The Delhi government on Saturday approved the formation of a separate school board for nearly 2,700 schools in the city, including about 1,000 government and about 1,700 private schools. Most of the schools are affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
The Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said in the about 20 to 25 state government schools would be de-affiliated from the CBSE and affiliated to the Delhi Board of School Education (DBSE) in the upcoming academic year 2021-2022. In the next four-five years all the schools would be brought under it.
While presenting the 2020 annual budget for Delhi, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had announced that the government was setting aside Rs. 62 crore to set up a separate state board of education.
On Saturday, Kejriwal announced that they would kick off the process of getting the board of the ground in the upcoming academic year. The CBSE has recommended that schools begin the new academic session in April.
“We will not move all the schools to this board at once. In this first year, 20-25 government schools will be brought under this board. Their affiliation to the CBSE will be removed and they will be affiliated to this board. We will decide which schools these will be in consultations with their principals, teachers and parents. And we believe that within four or five years, all private and government schools will voluntarily join this board,” he said.
He also stated that the Delhi board would have continuous assessment throughout the year as opposed to a final board exam.
He said the new Board would have a governing body headed by the Education Minister of the Delhi government and an executive body headed by a chief executive officer. The DBSE will be aimed at imparting such education that prepares “fiercely patriotic” and self-dependent students who serve the society and the country in a selfless manner, he said.
The Board will bring in best international practices and high-end techniques in school education. It will impart education as per the aptitude of the students, he added.
