New Delhi: On Wednesday, US president Donald Trump confirmed that he would attempt to re-impose sanctions on Iran by triggering a “snapback” procedure, with the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo set to formally notify the United Nations Security Council of the decision later this week.
Media reports that initiating the ‘Snapback’ process would require Iran to suspend nuclear enrichment related and reprocessing activities, re-impose an arms embargo and more.
The Trump administration wants to re-impose all international sanctions that had been eased under that deal. Other nations claim the US has no standing to make the demand because the Trump administration pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear deal two years ago. “The USA will demand the restoration of UN sanctions on Iran” said Donald Trump
“Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” The US President Donald Trump said.
Furthermore Donald Trump said “When I win the election, within the first month, Iran will come to us and seek a deal” The US noting how sanctions have crippled economy of Iran.
Pompeo and Trump have made no secret of their intention to invoke the rare and controversial diplomatic move in the wake of its defeat at the United Nations last week on extending the arms embargo. The US won just one other ‘yes’ vote, with China and Russia opposed and the 11 other members abstaining.
