Covid-19: Four volunteers of Pfizer’s vaccine develop facial paralysis

New Delhi: The United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has revealed that four volunteers for the Covid-19 experimental vaccine developed by global pharmaceutical major Pfizer, Inc. have developed Bell’s Palsy, after receiving the vaccine shots.

Bell’s Palsy is a medical condition that causes a temporary paralysis of the facial muscles when the nerves controlling them become inflamed, swollen, or compressed, media reported on Friday.

According to the FDA, it is unclear what really caused Bell’s Palsy in the four volunteers. Its regulators have asked health experts to continuously monitor volunteers who had participated in the trials of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Earlier, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla also appeared somewhat unsure about the vaccine’s efficacy. During his interview with NBC’s Lestor Holt, he said, “I think this is something that needs to be examined. We are not certain about that right now with what we know.”

This comes as many countries, especially rich nations, are competing with each other to secure Covid-19 vaccines for their people who are eagerly waiting for a cure.

Some countries, including Canada, the US, and the UK, have secured Covid-19 vaccine doses enough to inoculate their entire population multiple times, leaving lower or middle-income countries to wait.
