New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra initiative and laid foundation stones of one bridge via video conference.
Mahabahu-Brahmaputra initiative will be helpful to improve connectivity in the eastern states.
Foundation stone of Inland Water Transport Terminal at Jogighopa and various tourist jetties on Brahmaputra and launch of digital solutions for Ease-of-Doing-Business is also part of the Mahabahu-Brahmaputra initiative.
The PM also laid the foundation stone for a four-lane bridge over the Brahmaputra between Dhubri and Phulbari. The proposed bridge will be on NH-127B, originating from Srirampur on NH-27 and terminating at Nongstoin on NH-106 in Meghalaya.
It will connect Dhubri in Assam to Phulbari, Tura, Rongram and Rongjeng in Meghalaya.
On the construction of bridge – PM Modi said that “Distance between Assam and Meghalaya is around 250 kms by road and in the future, it will only be around 19 to 20 kilo meters. This bridge will also prove to be significant for international movement of traffic to other nations.
The bridge, to be built with a total cost of approx Rs 4997 crore will meet the long-standing demand of the people of Assam and Meghalaya who were depending on ferry services to travel between the two banks of the river. It will reduce the distance of 205 km to be travelled by road to 19 km, which is the total length of the bridge.
